Watch Where You Train!
by: Kim Watson
TASK works our bloodhounds here in a small town USA (Jacksboro,
TX) and some of our training, especially in the summer months, is
done at night. We had a trail layer lay a trail from the courthouse
square down several city blocks, loop back and end up hiding in the
post office. The inside of the post office is shaped like a T, the
lock boxes on one end which is lit and open at all hours so folks
can come in and get their mail. Our trail layer entered the post
office and opted to go to the unlit other end of the post office
lobby where the trash cans and tables were located and find a place
to hide. She (a citizen doing community service hours) curled
up in a fetal position partially hidden by a trash can.
Enter "Public Citizen" coming to get her mail....
A lady coming in to retrieve her mail spots half a body laying in
the unlit corner and cautiously approaches her. When she gets to
where she can see her face, our trail layer whispers to her,
"It's okay, they're tracking me with the bloodhounds!"
Our average citizen literally bolts from the post office and spying
us rounding the corner with the dog, begins pointing and
calling...."She's in there!" She had already dialed 911 on
her cell phone and we had a fun time explaining to my dispatcher
that we were training.
Lesson learned: At the request of my sheriff and boss, if we are
training anywhere in town at night, we have to let the dispatcher
know first.
