Landfill Search
Teana Robbins & Kobee
Yakima, Washington
We were looking for a 35-year-old male who was a dumpster diver according to his girlfriend. Both are meth users. Missing 5-21-02, reported by girlfriend.
On 6-10-02, I responded to this search in Grant County with Kobee. It was NASTY! Due to the saturation of scent, I wouldn't think we would ever want to clear landfills; however, the only reason I accepted was due to two handlers checking the area out first and letting me know its conditions, (re: hazards, steep/level, etc.).
Grant Co. was level w/layers of gravel, no apparent hazardous exposures (chemicals etc.). I decided to go for the experience of saturated scent, see how Kobee would react, etc.
The area was 150-300 feet, dead animal remains present (dog, pig, deer, cow), as well as other yucky stuff, (not to mention a gorilla suit that scared the heck outa me!). Kobee and I gridded the area and worked about one hour with frequent water breaks. She showed interest in a Kleenex that looked like it had blood on it (like a bloody nose), she also showed interest in a couple of other areas (pawing at a rock area and under a tire with nothing else exposed that I could see).
After I believed we did a good job clearing the area in question, we hid a scent source in another area of landfill for a positive find and I worked her into the wind. She located, alerted and returned me to the scent source. So I figured she still was working throughout the search in the area.
